Shireen Mitchell
Shireen Mitchell is known for her provocative and insightful style of engaging audiences. She speaks with energy and enthusiasm on the wide array of topics that she covers. She focuses on new trends in technology and social media for the private and public sectors.
As a self-proclaimed “geekette,” Shireen has always embraced her inner techie. You could always catch her playing pong or “chatting” on her computer on the bulletin board systems (BBS), before we had the World Wide Web. She managed the Politically Black.com website prior to its sale and public offering during the 90's as one of the only women of color web entrepreneurs. All of these achievements were accomplished before Shireen founded Digital Sisters, Inc. to focus on using digital media and technology to access tools for women and children who are traditionally underserved.
Shireen helps organize various tech events around the country including the Digital Community, Techno Rodeo, Shes Geeky D.C., Feminism 2.0 , Tech Adventure DC , Computers, Freedom and Privacy and others. Did you know that she created the game TechnoDemic, a multimedia competition to help youth learn technology and programming terms for the Techno Rodeo?
As an author she has written “Gaining Daily Access to Science and Technology” in the book 50 Ways to Improve Women's Lives and Access to Technology: Race, Gender, Class Bias. Shireen covers various areas of tech, media, policy and diversity in articles and blogs.
Shireen has spoken on topics that include the impact of technology, social media and mobile apps on communities across the country. She has appeared on media shows like WETA, KPFA, NPR and Women's Radio and presented on various topics including "Tweet This Change”, “Social Media ROI”, “Social Media Women of Color”, “Google Apps for Nonprofits”, and “Technology Savvy Secures Economic Stability”.
As Chair of the Media and Technology Task Force of the National Council of Women's
Organizations (NCWO), Ms. Mitchell works to increase participation in technology and media by women. She also sits as the Vice Chair of the parent organization. In addition, she is a member of various women's media groups.
Shireen has been awarded Top 100 DC Tech Titans , Social Citizen Award: Apps for Democracy DC , Rising Star: Woman of Color in Technology, Heroine in Technology , Community Technology Leader and nominated for The Root 100, Black Twitterati , Shorty Awards and Young Woman of Achievement.
Shireen was born and raised in the projects of New York City. She currently resides with her family in Washington DC, a city engrossed in government 2.0 , politics and where she also consults as a social media strategist.
